Phil Booth Sr. grew up playing basketball the old school way in Philadelphia, honing his game on the neighborhood courts. His experiences at home led him to a playing career at Coppin State University in Baltimore Maryland.

When Phil Booth Jr. was growing up, his father applied his own experiences. Phil Sr. shunned AAU ball at an early age for his son, instead dropping Phil Jr. at various neighborhood courts to learn to play through pick up games with youngsters who were often much older.
